A walk to remember. Introducing the next legend in the MadTree Legendary Lager Series: Emma "Grandma" Gatewood. An Ohio native, she was the first person to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail in 1955 at the age of 67.
It all started from a National Geographic article she read depicting the Appalachian Trail as beautiful, well-marked, and open-spaced with shelters waiting at the end of a day's hike. What sounded like a "lark" ended up being a much more treacherous go and an absolutely tremendous feat of hiking 2,050 miles in 146 days from Georgia to Maine.
There were times when Gatewood's mindset was to put "one foot in front of the other and just get there anyway I could."
A mother of 11 children, survivor of domestic abuse, and a failed first attempt of hiking the trail a year prior, Mrs. Emma Gatewood never gave up or stopped pursuing her goal. She encapsulates what it means to be legendary and her story continues to inspire people to this day.
